About Dr Manuel Galiñanes
I am a skilled cardiac surgeon trained in Spain, Canada, USA and the UK. I practiced in the UK for 23 years and I am now based in Barcelona (Spain). I have been a cardiac surgeon for more than 30 years and have carried out thousands of heart operations. My specialist areas are coronary bypass surgery, heart valve surgery, surgery of the aorta and heart failure. I will only operate on a patient when I know it is safe to do so and when I know that the surgery will prolong the patient´s life and/or improve their quality of life.
Heart Bypass Surgery
The coronary artery bypass operation (or CABG) is performed to treat narrowings in the coronary artery which can cause angina and heart attacks. The CABG operation is usually carried out with the aid of a heart lung machine and an arrested heart. In certain situations, it is safer to carry out the CABG operation without the heart lung machine and a beating heart (“of pump coronary artery bypass”).
I am specialised in using arterial conduits (eg, internal mammary arteries, radial artery) to construct the bypasses. These arterial conduits have better clinical results than the use of veins.
Sometimes, the correction requires the conjoint intervention of a surgeon to perform the bypasses and a cardiologist to dilate the remaining coronary artery narrowings with a stent, a procedure known as hybrid operation.
I am highly skilled in these procedures.
Heart Valve Surgery
Heart valves are structures inside the heart that ensure blood flows in one direction. These valves can become diseased and become narrowed with restriction of the blood flow, they also can become incompetent causing leaks or a combination of the two which leads to the heart muscle having to work harder. The heart becomes thicker, it can dilate and finally the function deteriorates causing heart failure.
I have an interest and expertise in the treatment of all heart valve diseases to be repaired or, when this is not possible, to replace them. In some cases the heart valve surgery can be performed by a smaller incision than is used for other heart operations. This leads to a quicker recovery and return to normal activities.
Surgery of the Aorta
The aorta is the major artery that transport blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body. Aortic rupture, caused by dilatation (aneurysm) or tearing (dissection) of the aortic wall, is a fatal condition that if left untreated may terminate the life in an elevated number of patients. I am specialised in correcting this pathology in a selective manner before complications occur and also accutely when a rapid life-saving operation is required. We can provide a prompt diagnosis and treatment of these conditions successfully by a well trained and coordinated team of cardiac surgery, anaesthesia and post-operative care unit.
Stem cell therapy offers hope to patients who have congestive heart failure, a fatal condition that affects the pumping ability of the heart. Approximately half of the patients with severe heart failure will die within five years of diagnosis. Stem cells can regenerate or promote repair of the damaged tissue. I am one of the first surgeons in the world to use autologous bone marrow cells for the repair of the damaged heart. Currently, I am performing investigations to understand the mechanisms of heart repair, and also to refine the clinical application of treatments to growth heart muscle and blood vessels.
